Greetings!

Last week, FIBA AML Compliance Committee Chair Guillermo Horta, Director Wayne Shah, Legal & Regulatory Affairs co-Chair Daniel Gutierrez and I traveled to Washington DC to meet with regulators and members of Congress.

As you can see from the picture, FIBA was welcomed on Capitol Hill with open arms! We met with Ranking Member Maxine Waters, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer, Danielle Camner Lindholm – Director of National Security Policy of the House Financial Services Committee, and Megan Guiltinan – Financial Services Policy Advisor to Congressman Andy Barr. They were very interested in FIBA’s concerns on the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) and requested copies of our comment letters submitted to FinCEN. They were also very interested in the new Florida anti-ESG law and its potential impact on how banks do business.

We had meetings with representatives from OFAC to discuss any expected new guidance on Venezuela, Ukraine, or Russia sanctions, as well as the backlog in Venezuela-related applications for creditors with claims against the government and also spoke with Treasury’s Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes to discuss their progress on the final rules for the CTA and cryptocurrency regulation.

The AML Compliance and LARA committees will be planning a joint event to provide an update on all of the issues discussed and takeaways from the meetings. Stay tuned for more information!
